The Importance of Growth and Networking
It seems that every year, more and more birds are requiring placement or re-homing. This is a problem not only for F.E.A.T.H.E.R.S. but for similar organizations all across Canada and the U.S. Many in the “business” believe that the problem will become much, much worse as baby boomers age, retire and ultimately die. That, in addition to the huge increase in the number of birds (with lengthy lifespans) that have been bred for the pet trade over the past 20 or so years, will likely put even more strain on the available resources, rescuers and helpers.
F.E.A.T.H.E.R.S. has remained a relatively small group since its creation, more than 5 years ago. Now the time has come to grow. Growth can come in many ways. It is not just about traditional “membership” but also the number (and quality) of networking individuals both in our immediate geographical area and beyond. We are in dire need of good, trustworthy people who love birds (or at least care about the welfare of animals in general) in all areas of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, across Canada, throughout North America, even worldwide. Sometimes it is not a matter of what you know, but who you know that can get a job done.
This “network” will ultimately help to provide homes for needy birds but may also simply help in transporting or arranging temporary sanctuary in an immediate emergency. It is with a network in place that we can truly do great work and make a difference. There is no way that one person or organization will ever be able to fill this growing need.
If you are someone, or know someone who can or maybe should be involved, please don’t be shy. Some people may never be called upon, someone could get the call tomorrow...
